WILLIAM MANDEL

 Retailer of 1890's Dies William Mandel Ran General Store on LaGrange Road

William Mandel, one of the early settlers in the LaGrange area, and partner in the Mandel Brothers general store which operated at 17-19 LaGrange road for many years, died Sunday, January 18, 1948.

Mr. Mandel was born December 17, 1870, on a farm north of 31st street and LaGrange road.  He received his early education at the Proviso Lutheran school and also attended business college in Chicago.

In 1893 his father set William and Fred up in business as Mandel Brothers, proprietors of the general store on LaGrange road.  The store carried general merchandise, groceries and supplies that farmers needed.

Retired in 1922

However, in 1912 the partnership between the brothers ended and William Mandel continued to operate the retail store until his retirement in 1922.

It was in 1922 when he built a home at 120 South Sixth avenue, where he lived until his death.  Mrs. Mandel passed away in 1928.

Mr. Mandel was married on April 3, 1930 to Florence Litzenberger, who survives him, along with one son, Herbert W. Mandel of Grosse Pointe, Michigan; and three grand-daughters, Mrs. William H.Coddington of Grosse Pointe, Michigan; Mrs. Frank Steel, Jr., of Tucson, Arizona and Miss Marjorie R. Mandel of LaGrange.  Another son, Walter F. Mandel of LaGrange, died in 1936.

Mr. Mandel was active in the affairs of  St. John's Lutheran church.  He served on the building committee when the present church was erected, and was on the school building purchase committee which procured the present Lutheran school from the LaGrange school board.  He was also on the committee that started the St. John's Lutheran cemetery on LaGrange road. 

Services were held at 2:30 Tuesday, January 20, at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. H. Kramer, pastor, officiating.  Interment was at LaGrange cemetery.
