Salt Creek -- Native American Villages

Prior to the arrival of the 'white' settlers the Native Americans had long appreciated and benefited by the resources of Salt Creek.  Several Native American villages existed along Salt Creek well into the 19th Century.

For a description of the current course of Salt Creek please check Salt Creek, but this reproduction of an early 19th Century map of Native American trails shows much of its course at that time.  The Salt Creek trail (high-lighted in blue) paralleled the flow of Salt Creek.

(Click on the picture to the right for an enlargements...and wait a few seconds.)

We can get a closer in view of the Native American village in York Township on the following map.

Please note the area on the right side of the map north of the area labeled 'Hinsdale'.  The Native American areas follow the twisting course of Salt Creek.  This area continued for a short distance into Proviso Township.
