A Bit of Westchester History

A Young Community

(Fourth in a series)

The interesting photo reproduced above is taken from the Westchester News of January 24, 1931
and was loaned to us by Mrs. Stella Nelson.  It pictures Mayor Grant N. Britten greeting the
crew of the first train to arrive at the Mannheim-22nd Street station of the old "El".

The "El" came through Bellwood to Westchester and was an extension of the Garfield Park line.  The stop at Roosevelt Road was the main station.

In 1930, the tracks were extended from Canterbury - which had previously been the end of the line - to 22nd Street.  When not in use, the "El" cars were parked where the Community Park is now located.

A trip to the Loop on the "El" took only 38 minutes and the cost was 25 cents for the round trip for the round trip.  A train left the Roosevelt Road station every 12 minutes, and for every other car arriving there, a shuttle car was waiting to take passengers on to Canterbury Street or to the end of the line at 22nd Street.
