The Greater Chicago Magazine, June 1929

When the "campaign" was on to market Westchester as the dream suburb of the future the pre-depression press was often supportive.  We have previously posted to our site portions of the Westchester Tribune issue which was very optimistic to the plans of William Zelosky, Samuel Insull and the other entrepreneurs of Westchester..  (See Westchester Tribune Sept 28 1926 banner.)

The Greater Chicago Magazine, June 1929 issue, also got into the optimistic spirit.

Here we display some of the pages from that issue with key text.

On page 2 (shown below) was the following article.  The text of the article is enlarged to the right of the image make it easier to read.

WESTCHESTER AND ITS IMPORTANCE TO GREATER CHICAGO

In this age of great metropolitan cities the place of the suburb is of vast importance. With swift electric transportation to carry the people to and from the city, we find the population increasing far more rapidly just outside the city limits than anywhere within the civic confines.

This being the case the growth of new suburbs has an important bearing upon the welfare of the cities about which they lay. The well-being of Chicago may be pretty accurately gauged by the rate of growth and kind of development found in the outlying communities. These furnish homes for the new thousands coming to the city all the time and for those citizens who are constantly moving out from the congested sections in search of more ideal living conditions.

Seldom has any city been more favored than Chicago in splendid suburban communities. This issue of The Greater Chicago Magazine is devoted to telling the story of Westchester, the newest of these wonderful sections of the vast metropolitan district.

Westchester is a beautiful garden community where millions of dollars have been lavished in the creation of a perfect paradise for home-seekers. The great accomplishments made by George F. Nixon & Company and the many other groups associated in the upbuilding of this magnificent "made-to-order" city are dealt with at length in the succeeding pages. A perusal will repay by showing the remarkable opportunities created in Westchester by the bringing together of all the essentials of a first-class modern home community.
