Masslow, William, Dr.

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"A professional man who has risen to prominence in his chosen profession during the few years in which he has resided in America, is Dr. Wm. Masslow.  He was born in Germany in 1866, where he received his education and scientific training.  He attended and absolved the high school (Gymnasium) at Hanover, where he received the diploma which entitled him to serve in the German Army as Einjahriger, and to enter the university.  he also studied at the university, Zurich.  When in Zurich at the Canton Hospital he received special instructions in internal medicine, under the world-known Prof. Eichhorst, and in surgery under Prof. Kroenlein, a famed specialist.  Such scientific training was the basis for success.  Dr. Masslow came to Chicago in 1900 where he passed the State Board examination, a necessity according to our laws.  He practiced medicine in Chicago until 1903 with good success.  A favored opportunity caused Dr. Masslow to move to harlem in 1903, where he opened an office on Ferdiand St. in connection with his Chicago office, later at Madison St. in the Harlem State Savings Bank Bldg.  He has been unusually successful and now enjoys a very large practice, not only in Harlem but in Oak Park, River Forest and Maywood.  He is tent physician for the Knights of Maccabees, also the Court Physician for the Independent Order of Foresters.  Mrs. Masslow is a highly educated and refined lady.  They have one daughter, Eleanor, who attended school in Zurich and is now a pupil in the Harlem school.  While she is now only in her fourteenth year, yet she has attracted considerable attention to her musical ability.
