Michelmann, G. H., Reverend

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"The people of Harlem are particular in the selection of pastors, especially so is this the case when they have a new church to build, and they believe they have made a wise choice in the selection of the Reverend G. H. Michelmann.  Saint Peter's congregation have partially completed one of the finest church edifices in the village and they hope in the near future to see its completion.  When the Reverend Michelmann took charge, there was a debt of $3000, but through his strenuous efforts, he has now about wiped out the indebtedness.

"Reverend G. H. Michelmann was born in Germany in 1871, where he graduated from one of the large universities and came to America in 1895.  He had a charge in Chicago and later in Indiana.  He came to Harlem in 1900 and is the first pastor of Saint Peter's Evangelical German Lutheran Church.  The congregation consisted at the beginning of only fourteen members, and now about sixty families are connected with it.  The members are quite progressive in the way of church societies.

"The Reverend Michelmann was married in Brookville, Indiana, to the Miss Elizabeth Klemme, a talented and charitable woman.  They have four children -- Oswald, Hans, Margaret and Clara."
