Handke, Otto K., Dr.

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"Dr. Handke was born in Germany in 1865, where he received his early education in the public high schools.  From there he went to England, where be lived one year, and came to America in 1889.  For a time he traveled extensively over America, and finally located at Evanston, Ill., where he became a student of the Northwestern University, graduating from the Medical Department of that institution.  He came to Harlem in 1897 and began the practice of medicine.  Dr. Handke is today one of the most successful physicians in Harlem.  In the beginning of his medical career, as with almost all young doctors, practice was slow and adverse circumstances beset on all sides, but with his ability and never tiring efforts, success has crowned his work.  Dr. Handke is medical examiner for several of the leading insurance companies.  he is also a member of social and benevolent societies.  In 1893 he married Miss Emilie Ehlers of Evanston.  They have six children -- Irene, Cecil, Mildred, Edna, Otto and Evelyn.  In 1904 Dr. Handke built the handsome new building at 96 Madison St., where he has his office and home."
