Urban, Otto J. E.

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"Mr. Otto J. E. Urban was born in Saxony, Germany in 1859.  He came to this country in 1872 and first made his home in Texas.  At the age of 24, he was engaged in that state in a large general merchandise business, which he conducted with great success.  Coming to the World's Fair in 1893, he was attracted by the greatness of Chicago, and decided to make this his permanent home.  Believing in the business future of Harlem, he bought a saloon at the corner of Elgin and Madison Sts., in 1894.  In 1898 desiring to enlarge his business he purchased and built the large and commodious quarters he noew occupies, which he has named the "Texas Siftings."  This is one of the most popular restaurants and cafes west of Chicago's limits.  Mr. Urban's motto is the best of everything for his patrons.  His bar is well stocked with the best wine and liquors, and in his restaurant, the sign, if it were in sight, would read, "If you do not see what you want, ask for it, and it will be served."  He has both Chinese and American cooks.  Mr. Urban not only enjoys a very large patronage from his own village, but also has a very large patronage from Chicago.  Trolley, sleighing and automobile parties make his place their headquarters.  Owing to his popularity, he commands and holds a very large trade.  A warm welcome is always extended at his door.  Mr. Urban has built up the good trade by well planned efforts.  He is a thorough believer in bringing in business concretely before the public, and is the largest advertiser in Harlem.  His faith lies in the modern version of Franklin's adage which says, "Late to bed and early to rise, hustle all day and advertise."

"Mr. Urban belong to several societies.  He was married in 1881 to Miss Emelia Schoff of Harlem.  They have four children -- Ottilie, Hugo, Hildegard and Leonora."
