Gorke, Otto F. Jr.

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"One of the rising young business men, whose future prospects are exceedingly bright, is Mr. Otto Gorke, Jr.  He was born in Kankakee, Illinois in 1878, and came to Harlem with his parents when he was twelve years old.  As he came to the village so young and attended its public schools, he can rightly be called one of Harlem's products, and as he is already one of the governing body, he will no doubt be one of the strong pillars upon which the coming greatness of the community will depend.

"Mr. Gorke learned the brewing trade in Chicago where he was employed for several years.  Later he was engaged with his father in the saloon business. In 1904, he and his brother, August, assumed their father's business under the name of Gorke Bros., and conducted a first class saloon at the well known corner of Harlem and Circle Aves.  They have a large business, not confined altogether to Harlem, but also from the adjoining villages.  Gorke Bros. was very popular, and they not only hold the past good reputation of the stand but are fast becoming the business.

"Mr. Otto, Jr., was elected by the people in 1905 as village trustee, which he is serving with honor and credit.  in 1900 he was married to one of Harlem's fairest daughters, Miss Lena Troost, daughter of Mr. Frank Troost, one of the early settlers and a prominent business man.  They have two children -- Rose and Lester -- and live in a beautiful home on Hannah St."
