Zimmerman, Ludwig

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"One of the oldest settlers of Cook Country is Mr. Ludwig Zimmermann, who was born in Germany in 1843 and came to Chicago in 1866.  He learned his trade, that of a baker, in the old country, that of a baker, at which he was employed in Chicago for twenty-two years.  He came to Harlem to live in 1884.  Desiring to go into business, in 1888 he started in a small way a confectionery store at 34 Franklin St.  His business rapidly increased and he added to his stock groceries, crockery, notions and bakery goods.  He has a well stocked store and does a good business.

"Mr. Zimmermann is a citizen and merchant held in high esteem by His patrons and friends.  He was married in 1884 to Miss Hannah Marth of Chicago, who died in 1902.  There is one living daughter, Mrs. Minnie Festner, who is devoted to her father and has been his assistant in business.
