Hann, Herman H.

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"Among the popular and progressive merchants of the village, and one who was practically raised here, is Mr. Herman H. Hann.  He was born at Elmhurst, Ill., in 1875, and came to Harlem with his parents in 1888.  He first started his business career by clerking in the grocery store of Mr. Martin Dammann, where he remained for several years.  Leaving the grocery business, he started to learn the steam fitting trade in Chicago, but returned to the grocery trade after an absence of one year and formed a partnership with is brother, Mr. Eh. H. Hann, in 1895; the style of the firm being Hann Bros.  Their store is located in 193 Madison St.  They also established a branch store at 319 Randolph St., Oak Park.  The firm dissolved in 1899, Mr. E. H. Hann taking the Oak Park store, and Mr. Herman H. Hann remaining at the main store in Harlem, where he carries one of the largest stocks of staple and fancy groceries, fresh and salt meats, flour and feed, in the village.

"Mr. Hann is the son of one of the oldest living settlers in the vicinity of Harlem.  He was married in 1901 to a estimable young lady, Miss Minnie Bartels, of Chicago, whose father is a real estate dealer on the West Side."
