Strunk, Henry

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"Mr. Henry Strunk, one of Harlem's self-made business men, was born in Holstein, Germany, in 1859, and came to his adopted American village in 1875 when a lad under sixteen years of age.  After three months' attendance at the public schools he became master of the rudiments of the English language.  he then found employment as a carpenter in mill work.  Later he was employed by the Paul J. Daemicke Mfg. Co. as foreman in the department where market and store fixtures were made, and remained with them for twenty years.  Some of the their work can be seen at the present time in many of the leading stores of the village.

"He met with an accident which disabled him from handling tools, and was forced to seek other employment.  he opened a saloon on Des Plaines Ave., then moved this business place to 121 Madison St., where he has been for several years, enjoying a very prosperous trade.  He is a good citizen, sociable, and has the good will of all his patrons and acquaintances.  he has served the village as a trustee for three terms of two years each, from 1895 to 1901.  This service was rendered with a clean record and credit to himself and the community.

"Mr. Strunk was married in 1884 to Miss Hattie Utes, daughter of one of the earliest settlers.  She died in 1902.  They had two sons and one daughter -- Walter and Henry, living, and Anna, deceased.  Walter is married and lives in the village.  Henry lives at home.

"In 1903 Mr. Strunk married Miss Minna Hoffman of Chicago.  They have three children -- Herman, Emma and Mable.  They live in a very comfortable home at 91 North Elgin St."
