Mundt, Henry

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"There are a few men in Harlem who can celebrate not only their fiftieth birthday but also the fiftieth anniversary of the settlement of their native place.  Among them is Mr. Henry Mundt, who was born in Harlem in 1857, one year after the first settlers arrived.  His parents came from Germany to Harlem in 1856.  He received his education in the village schools, and while yet a boy began work in a greenhouse.  When a young man, in 1879, desiring to engage in business on his own account, he built a greenhouse on Madison St. where Golterman's grocery store is now.  He is and has been in business continually ever since, for twenty-seven years.  For a number of years he grew flowers exclusively for the Chicago market.  He has been highly successful as a florist, and has the respect and esteem of his fellow townsmen and the people with whom he has had business dealings.  His present location, where he has been for a number of years, is at Harlem Ave. and Jackson Blvd. where he has once acre devoted to growing cut flowers.  He makes a specialty of carnations.  When a young man, a young lady by the name of Miss Fanny Davey of Chicago saw in Mr. Mundt a full combination of success and manly qualities; so they were married in 1881.  They have six children -- Henry, Ida, Frank, Ethel, Grace and Willard.  They are at this time building the first concrete block house in the village.  It will be a handsome building of fourteen rooms."
