Pelles, Henry L.

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"While not now a resident of Harlem, yet his few years of non-residence has not separated his friendly attitude from the village.  He perhaps has more friends and associates here than in any other town, and is always at home among them in spirit, if not in fact.  There being very few citizens, young or old, of the village who do not know Henry L. Pelles.  H has sold confectionery to the merchants of Harlem for over twenty-five years, few of his original customers being in business today.

"Mr. Pelles ws born in Chicago in 1855.  He attended only two terms of the public schools when it became necessary for him to go to work.  He learned the trade of a tanner.  When he was 25 years of age, desiring to go into business on his own account, he selected the wholesale candy trade.  He started in a very small way, his territory being the west side of Chicago and suburban towns.  His trade has increased rapidly, and he is today one of the most popular and successful wholesale wagon confectioners in his territory.  His endeavor is always to supply his customers with the best stock obtainable, and the newest novelties in the business.

"Mr. Pelles belongs to a number of social and fraternal organization among them the Masonic fraternity, president of the Harlem Lodge of Loyal Americans, financial secretary of the Jobbing Confectioners Association of Chicago.  He is also an active member, and one of the trustees of the German Lutheran Church of Austin, having given considerable of his time to the upbuilding of the same.  He was married in 1880 in Chicago to Miss Muna Kuhl, a most pleasant and amiable woman.  They have one son, George, who lives with his parents.
