Muehlenhaupt, Gustav

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"Mr. Gustav Muehlenhaupt was born in Germany in 1879 where he learned the cigar making trade.  At the age of eighteen he came to this country a poor boy, but possessed a firm determination to succeed.  He arrived in Kansas City, Mo., in 1888.  Desiring to see more of the Great West, he went from there to Greeley, Colo., and from there to Odgen, Utah.  Attracted by the Chicago World's Fair, he came to Chicago in 1892.  He remained in the city a short time and then went to Melrose park., Ill., where he opened a cigar factory.  In 1894 he moved his factory to Harlem.  He has been very successful in his business, has a number of workmen employed all the time manufacturing fine and popular brands of cigars.  His well known brand "Millhead" is sold by nearly all the dealers in the village and the surrounding towns.  As a citizen, Mr. Muehlenhaupt stands high in the estimation of his fellow townsmen.  His pleasant and sociable disposition, and his honest business methods have made him an enviable reputation.

"He was married in 1893 to Miss Bertha Kunkel, a woman of high character, who died in 1904.  They had eight children, one Gustave, deceased.  Those living are Werra, Edith, Della, Lydia, Clara, Alice and Vernon.  They live in a very pleasant home at 79 Ferdinand St.  His factory is also at that same number."
