Hartley, George F.

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"A young man of activity and vigor who takes great interest in the welfare of the village, is Mr. George F. Hartley.  He was born in the City of Washington, D. C. in 1877.  His father, Mr. J. H. Hartley, was a government official for a number of years, being chief vault keeper of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing at Washington.

"Mr. George F. Hartley attended the public schools of Washington, D. C., and graduated at the Georgetown University.  He came to Chicago in 1893 and entered the services of Chicago, Burlington & Quincy R. R. Co., where he has been continuously engaged for thirteen years.  He devotes a considerable amount of his time to the affairs of citizenship.  He is an active leader in local politics, being a member of the village school board, chairman of the finance committee.  He is a popular member of a number of social and benevolent societies among I. O. O F., F. O. E., and N. A U.  Mr. Hartley is a firm believer in the future growth and prosperity of the village.  He is a pleasant, congenial gentleman, and has a host of friends.  He was married in 1903 to one of Harlem's fair daughters, Miss Martha Gaden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Gaden."
