Lehmann, Frank

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"A man who has been identified with the progress of Harlem in many directions is Mr. Frank Lehmann, familiarly known to every citizen as Judge Frank Lehmann.  He was born in Stettin, Germany, in 1859.  His father died when he was one year old.  He left his native country when he was thirteen years old, in 1872, and came with his mother and sister to Chicago.   He learned the trade of printing, which he worked at for a number of years.  He came to Harlem in 1894, and a year later started the publication of the "Harlem Post", a German weekly newspaper, which he conducted successfully for ten years.  In 1905 he sold the paper to Chicago parties.  In 1897 he was elected Justice of the Peace without opposition, and has continued in this office ever since.  When his present term expires he will have held the office twelve years, being the first and only Justice of the Peace in Harlem.

"Judge Lehmann conducts a large real estate and insurance business, the drawing of legal papers, house renting, taking care of estates, etc.  he also represents several Western land companies, and frequently heads large excursions of Western home seekers.  His various duties make him a very busy man.  About six years ago, in connections with his son, Mr. George Lehmann, he opened a job printing office at the corner of Madison St. and Des Plaines Ave.  It is under the personal supervision of the latter.  He does a large business in all classes of printing, from a sale bill to the finest class of stationery and booklet work.

"Judge Lehmann was married in 1882 to Miss Anna Elders of Chicago, a most excellent wife and mother.  They have four children -- Anna, Frances, George, and Marie, who live at home.
