Bechstein. Emil W.

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"The subject of our sketch, a strong believer in the future of Harlem, though at present not living in the village, yet who formerly was one of Harlem's prominent and successful business men, is Mr. Emil W. Bechstein.  While he has not business interest in the village, yet his personal pride will always be here as the place of his early endeavors and achievements, and where his father and mother spent their declining days and were buried.  His many friends and acquaintances make the place a happy spot in his memory.

"In 1895 Mr. Bechstein engaged in business in Harlem at Washington Boulevard and Harlem Avenue.  His summer garden, pavilion and bowling alleys will long be remembered by many of the people of the village, those from the adjoining villages, and Chicago fro their convenience, comfort and artistic decorations and furnishings.  His place was patronized only by the best of people, and was conducted in a faultless manner.  After the death of his parents he disposed of his business and traveled extensively in California and other interesting sections of our country.

"Mr. Bechstein was born in Chicago in 1859, and attended the City public schools.  During his junior years he was employed by his father, Henry Bechstein, who was engaged in a large grocery business in the City.  He is popular, is always courteous, has a host of friends, belongs to several fraternal and social organizations and is a charter member of the Bachelor's Club."
