Wiechmann, Christoph

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"Mr. Christoph Wiechmann was born in Mecklenberg, Germany, in 1855, where he received his early education.  He attended the High School at Holtzmunden for one year and the School of Technology at Buxtihuda for three years.  One year after completing his education he passed the State examination and became Inspecting Architect for the City of Schwan.

"Mr. Wiechmann came to Chicago in 1883 and moved to Harlem in the Spring of the same year, engaging in the brick mason's trade.  After a time he returned to Chicago to take up the contracting business, which he followed until 1889.  From this date until 1893 he was engaged in the architect's trade.  He then opened a saloon in Chicago and conducted it there for four years, then came to Harlem and built on Madison Street near Concordia Cemetery, opening a saloon and restaurant, called "The Concordia House", which is modern in all respects.  Mr. Wiechmann was married in Germany in 1881 to Miss Dora Hill, daughter of the fame Kantor Hill.  They have three children -- Fred, Dora and Anna, all living at home with their parents.  Mrs. Wiechmann is a most amiable woman and is strongly devoted to her family and home.  Mr. Wiechmann is a member of several fraternal and benevolent organizations.  he is one of the successful and progressive citizens of the village.  Besides being a property owner, he has other business interests."
