Meseke, Charles

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"Mr. Charles Meseke, one of the early settlers, was born in Germany in 1852 and came to Harlem with his parents in 1866.  He learned the carpenter's trade and was employed twelve years by J. K. Russell & Co. (sash, doors and blinds), Chicago.  Accidentally losing a part of one hand, he was compelled to leave his trade and then he entered into the saloon business.  Since 1894 he has been engaged in the retail grocery trade.  He has been active in public and social affaires, serving on the Town Board for six years, and a member of several social and benevolent organizations.  By close attention to business, he has been successful, and has always worked for the welfare of the village.  In 1874 he was married to Miss Kate Bayer who was born in Germany and came to Harlem with her parents in 1871.  She has been a valuable helpmate in their private life and an earnest co-worker in their business matters.  Mrs. Meseke has always been active in social affairs.  To Mr. and Mrs. Meseke were born four children -- Louise, Charles, Paulina and Katie, all now deceased.  Pauline and Katie died at an early age, Charles at thirteen, and Louise at twenty-one, after becoming the wife of Mr. Bliss and leaving a son, Charles Meseke Bliss, who is now ten years old, reared by his grand-parents, their comfort and joy."
