From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"Among the early settlers of Harlem is Mr. August Hillmer, who cannot only celebrate his fiftieth birthday this year, but also the fiftieth anniversary of his coming to what is now the village of Harlem.  He was born in Lombard, Illinois, in 1856 and was brought to Harlem by his parents the same year.  His mother was one of the best known early settlers.  His father was the first carpenter in teh village and built its first house.

"Mr. Hillmer attended the Oak Ridge School on Lake Street.  When fifteen years of age he learned the carpenter's trade, and has continued in the trade in Harlem ever since, being one of the men who has helped in a practical ay to build the village.  He is one of the respected citizens, and as his entire life been spent here, he naturally takes pride in the welfare of the place.  He built the first Lutheran school house in the village.  He is in partnership with his brother Charles, the style of the firm being Hillmer Bros.  Their shop is at 78 Circle Ave.  The firm has a large business in general contracting and carpenter work.

"Mr. Hillmer is a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.  In 1880 he married Wilhelmina Drechsler.  They had eight children, five of whom are living -- Anna, Freda, Emil, Henry and Lily -- al live at home."
