Scherrer, Anthony

From the "The Village of Harlem: Its People, Homes and Business – 50th Anniversary Souvenir 1856 to 1906"

"A great friend of the boys, one who  himself is still a boy, and one of the respected merchant citizens of Harlem, is Mr. Anthony Scherrer.  He holds a unique position with the young people of the village.  Many young men who are now in business, or holding good position, look back to him as their first employer, from whom they received their inspiration to a successful business career, which many of them are now making.  For many years, in connection with his general store, he has been the Harlem circulator of Chicago papers.  During this time he has employed as many as two hundred Harlem boys as carriers.  He has always been very considerate and liberal with the boys, rewarding them for excellent services.  He gave one boy, who now holds a fine position with one of the largest business houses in Chicago, a gold watch as a token of his appreciation.  On cold winter mornings when the thermometer registered 20 degrees below zero he would often assist in carrying papers to help them out.

"In 1894 Mr. Scherrer opened a jewelry store at 122 Madison St.  Then in 1896 he moved to 183 Madison St.  From there, in 1899, he moved to his present location at No. 6 Des Plaines Ave.  In connection with his jewelry department he carries a large line of stationery, confectionery, cigars, school and photographic supplies, etc.  He can sell you almost anything from a threshing machine to a tin cup.  If you cannot find any odd thing you want at Scherrer's, it is not in town."
