Braga, Merritt

In the 1920s Merritt Braga moved to Broadview and opened an automobile repair business.  Later he would serve as Assistant Chief of the Broadview Fire Department.  He was elected Broadview's Village President in 1937 and served in this capacity for 43 years until his death on February 5, 1980.  He set the national record for the longest holder of a single office.  Through his political life in Broadview he was only defeated once, in 1926, after the "speed trap" scandal involving Joseph "Indian Joe" Huszar.  For newspaper and photographs of Merritt Braga, see the additional Merritt Braga pages.
