Luurs, Josephine

On the night of January 5, 1933, Mrs. Josephine Luurs and the Village of Bellwood had a brush with the gangsters of Chicago.  Mr. Luurs was working as a waitress in the Bellwood tavern when "Handsome Jack" Klutas entered.  Mrs. Luurs thought he looked like some official checking to see if the bar in back would close at the proper time. However, he had only stopped in for some food.  She served him chili -- which became his last meal.  Early the next morning Mr. Klutas was shot at 619 South 24th Avenue, by the State's Attorney's police. Jack Klutas had been a bank robber, kidnapper and killer.
