The Puscheck Family Journal

Compiled by Shirley Slanker (s333@aol.com) 562-9263

This is a gathering of information which has been handed down through the years.  Some has been documented and some is word of mouth.  This "Tree" and its' tracking branches are always open to corrections, additions and deletions.  I encourage you to participate in the tracking of your "Roots".  Up to date information is greatly appreciated and many time the hardest to find and track. It is never too late to join in...

In this journal there are two locations to which I refer.  One is Proviso Township, Illinois.  This was the name of the area commonly used prior to 1905.  In 1905 the Village of Hillside was created and thereafter you will find the Village of Hillside, Illinois as the reference used.  There are also two cemeteries located on the premises of Immanuel Lutheran Church.  The oldest one was named Proviso Cemetery was discontinued as a burial place and some graves were transferred from the old cemetery to the newly founded church cemetery and there after you will see the name of Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery referred to as the cemetery of burial and the cemetery still in use.  The Proviso Cemetery is said to have been covered over in 1922 and all markers removed.  It is thought the cemetery had fallen into disrepair and not maintained and only visited infrequently by a few.

An interesting note is that there is a street named for the Boeger family that is located in Westchester, Illinois and a road name for Puscheck.  The Puscheck Street is located in Bellwood.  Westchester once used the name Puscheck on a road that is now called Gardner Road.  Westchester borders Hillside, Illinois.  The Boeger and Puscheck families were a very determining factor in the development of the area.  The land on which sits the Oakridge Mausoleum/Abbey and Cemetery was once property belonging to the Boeger Family.  A large number of Boegers are interred in the Mausoleum/Abbey and Cemetery.

Puscheck --First Generation

  1. Christian Puscheck (#2163) was born before 29 September 1835, the first event for which there is a recorded date.  His body was interred in Proviso Township, Illinois, Proviso Cemetery.

He married Anna Rosina Chuebsch Puscheck 6 July 1856  (Anna Rosina Chuebsch Puscheck is @2164.)  Anna was born in Luzine, Silescia 2 November 1800.  Her body was interred June 1875 in Proviso Township, Illinois, proviso Cemetery.  Anna died 18 June 1875 at 74 years of age.  Anna came to America in 1830.  Anna is buried in the old Proviso Cemetery that presently lies on the west side of the new Immanuel Lutheran Church and School.  There is no grave marking.  I find her maiden also spelled Chyiibsis.

Christian died 9 may 1861.  The Puscheck family came from Prussia near the Polish border.  They immigrated to America in September 1839.  Christian died in 1861.  He is among the nine founding fathers of Immanuel Lutheran School.

Christian Puscheck and Anna Rosina Chuebsch Puscheck had the following family:

  1. Joann Gottlieb Puscheck was born 29 September 1835 and died 30 March 1901.
