Obermann, Adolph W.

Adolph W. Obermann became the principal of the Immanuel Lutheran School in 1928.

O'Brien, Edward K.

Edward K. O'Brien was Assistant Superintendent of the Broadview's Lindop School in 1964.

O'Brien, William J.

Father William O'Brien succeeded John Nawn as pastor of Saint Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, La Grange.  In 1946 he was delighted to make the final payment on the new church building dedicated in 1931.

Odgen, William

Olson, Palmer F. Olson & Russell, Lillian

The first persons married at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church were Palmer F. Olson and Lillian Russell on February 15, 1930.

Owens, Warren

One of six members of the first Westchester Board of Trustees, 1926.

Parks, Emil J.

Emil Parks was the village clerk in 1980.  After the death of village president Merritt E. Braga in 1980 Parks became the president of Broadview.  He served as president until his retirement in December of 1991.

Peckat, Walter

One of three Broadview Deputy Marshalls appointed by Marshall Huszar to serve at the Government Hospital Grounds, located near Roosevelt Road between First Avenue and Ninth Avenue.

Peebles, C.

The Westchester Woman’s Club was also organized in 1930 with Miss C. Peebles as first president.

Pelles, Henry L.

Pennoyer, Stephen

Stephen Pennoyer owned land south of the Covell property on Section 17.  He was the first Proviso Township Supervisor.

Miss Elizabeth Peters, the second teacher at the Immanuel Lutheran school in 1948.

Plumb, Mrs. C. J.

Mrs. C. J. Plumb was one of several women in whose homes Miss Anne E. McLaughlin and Mary Cassidy taught Catechism classes.  The classes were before the establishment of Saint Domitilla School in Hillside.

Pohlmann, Lawrence

Lawrence Pohlmann was the principal at the Immanuel Lutheran school in 1948.

Popp, Arthur

In January 1931 Arthur Popp was appointed Broadview Marshall.  He served for less than four month, resigning in April of the same year.

Prime, Klaus

One of six members of the first Westchester Board of Trustees, 1926.  In 1927 he retained his role as a Westchester Trustee.

Prosser, Herbert

Herbert Prosser was an early Captain of the Broadview Fire Department.

Rapley, Mrs. Donald

Mrs. Donald Rapley was Secretary and charter member of Broadview's Women's Auxiliary Fire Department in 1953.  In 1964 she was again elected Secretary.

Rathe, Emma

Rauch, Alfred, Pastor

Pastor Alfred Rauch started Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church as a mission church in 1928.  It was the first church established after the formal formation of the Village of Westchester.

Reiche Family

Reiche family operated a grocery store out of his basement and lived north of Roosevelt Road.

Resta, Doric

Doric Resta was the winner of the first derby at Broadview's Speedway racetrack was on June 26, 1915.  he drove a French Peugot and, driving against of field of 21 cars he became the holder of a new world speed record.  Resta had averaged 97.58 miles per hour, for a total of 500 miles.  He beat by more than 50 per cent, the fastest time ever made by a railroad train. On August 7, 1915, a match race between four of the best drivers in the world was run. Dorio Resta, winner of the derby, romped home a victor over Earl Cooper, Barney Oldfield, and Bat Bunnan, the American favorites.

Rice, Lucien and Julia

In 1891 Lucien and Julia Rice purchased and subdivided the area bounded by Bellwood Avenue, Butterfield Road, Eastern Avenue and the Chicago, Freeport, and St. Paul Railroad Company was.  This subdivision was called Bellwood, the first use of that name in the area.  Except for their names on the abstract little else is known about the Rices.  They lived somewhere around the Bellewood subdivision because Lucien was appointed postmaster in November, 1895 and held the post until July, 1899.  At that time the "Bellewood" post office was located at the passenger station of the Chicago and Great Western Railroad at Bellwood Avenue. 

Rix, Fred

Fred Rix succeed Mr. Herpolheimer as the teacher at the second Immanuel Lutheran schoolhouse.

Robb, John

Roehrs, Henry, Reverend

Heinrich (Henry) Roehrs was born August 29, 1862.  Starting in 1905 he was the minister for many years at the Immanuel Lutheran Church.  He contributed to the area in many ways including bringing three of his sons to the ministry, Walter Roehrs in Western Springs, Paul Roehrs in Norwood Park and Gerhard Roehrs in South Dakota.  Reverend Roehrs died November 24, 1928. 

Roff, Donald

Donald Roff was added to Broadview's Police Department in April 1958.

Rogers, Alfred

Alfred Rogers was appointed a Special Deputy by Broadview Marshall Huszar to help with quarantine enforcement.  His duties were to ride a bicycle throughout the Village to see that no one left quarantined homes.

Rogers, Fred

Fred Rogers was then appointed Broadview Marshall.  He served until April of 1934.

Rossi, Beverly

Beverly Rossi was the President of the 1964 Mother's Club in Broadview.

Rotermund, Edward

Edward Rotermund was added to Broadview's Police Department in October 1955.

Rowe, Clarence H.

Rowe, H. H.

A Maywood gentleman who flew as an air mail service pilot at Checkerboard Field, often flying the Maywood-Omaha route in the 1920s.

Rudolph, Paul

Treasurer of the William Zelosky's Company in the 1920's.  A graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology with years of experience in the construction work as well as an authority on bonds and finance.

Sadler, Walter B.

Assistant sales director of the William Zelosky's Company.  Over the years he filled such positions as division sales manager, manager of bond department, and sales school instructor.

Saffran, George

George Saffran was the first member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church to be ordained into the ministry.

Frank Scarpaci was added to Broadview's Police Department in October 1953.

Schmidt, Lars and Eddie

Lars (1884-1890) and Eddie (1887-1890) Schmidt, victims of childhood diseases.
Buried in Forest Park.

This poignant monument of two brothers commemorates the short lives of Lars and Eddie Schmidt, ages six and two respectively. The brothers, who lived at 869 W. 21st Street (now 2038 W. 21st Street) in Chicago, died of diphtheria just two days apart. They were the sons of Frieda and Lars Schmidt, an undertaker. They still receive small gifts on their graves and their monument serves as a landmark for many who visit the cemetery.

Before the discovery of penicillin and other antibiotics, many young children lost their lives to infectious diseases, such as diphtheria, smallpox, and influenza. During the nineteenth century, children under five years of age accounted for forty percent of the mortality rate.

Schnell, August 

Head of the construction department for the William Zelosky's Company in the 1920's. By 1926 had eighteen years experience building houses and apartment buildings in the various Zelosky community centers.

Schroeder, Harry

In April 1931 Harry Schroeder was appointed Broadview Marshall.  He tendered his resignation as Marshall in December 1933.   He served again as Village Marshal for a few months in 1934.

Scott, William F., Dr.

William Scott was a country doctor in the Hillside area since 1892.  Until the automobile came along he used a bicycle then  a horse and buggy. When the automobile did appear in the early 1900's, he was the first to own a car west of Chicago -- an Oldsmobile.  However, he found the horse still had something the automobile did not — a horse didn't have to be pushed uphill or out of the many mud holes found in the roads in those days.

Seegers, Louis

Shabbona

Head chief of the Potowatomis at the time of the Black Hawk War (1832).  He is described by Joseph Vial (see Vial Family), an early settler, as "about the noblest specimen I ever saw".  For some time Shabbona's people lived in peace on the John Vial farm.  It was through Shabbona's leadership that his tribe remained quiet through the War.  After the Black Hawk War, Shabbona's Potowatatomis moved west with the rest of the area's Native Americans.

Shank, Charles

Shearburn, Arthur

Arthur Shearburn was the Vice President of the Broadview PTA for 1963-64.

Steinel, Marie

Strehl, Oscar, Father

Father Strehl began the construction of the school building in Hillside in 1922 and engaged the Sisters of Saint Francis to teach at Saint Domitilla.

Stendell, Mr. and Mrs. George

In October of 1952 a Lutheran Sunday School was started in the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Stendell with nine children attending the first session. The endeavor became known as the Berkeley-Hillside Lutheran Sunday School, Missouri Synod, with Arnold Brieschke as the Superintendent and Mrs. Brieschke and Judy Stendell the teachers.   This start would eventually grow into the Berkeley-Hillside Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod and later the Concordia Lutheran Church (of Hillside), Missouri Synod.

Strasser, Adolph

Streufert, Victor, Vicar

Vicar Victor Streufert was a faculty member of Concordia College.  In August of 1953 Vicar Streufert served as pastor at morning services for the new Berkeley-Hillside Lutheran Church.
