Who is important?  At best it is a subjective opinion of those individuals who influenced others or were "first" to participate in some significant way, be it in the 19th, 20th or even the 21st Century.  We appreciate information on more individuals you, the reader, feel we can add to the site.  The site is still young and has a long, long way to go.  Please feel free to contact me at j.arbuthnot@sbcglobal.net.  I will route your email through our other researchers.

Mesenbrink, Heinrich (Henry), Senior

Heinrich Mesenbrink Sr. was born sometime around 1799 in Hanover, Germany. He is among one of the earliest inhabitants of the settlement area.  He may have immigrated to the area prior to 1840. In the 1850 census it appears that all of his own children had been born in Germany.

Andreas writes in "A History of Cook County", under, "inventory of settlers of 1840 for Proviso Township... in J 8 40; Samuel Giles on Section 8, Nathan Dodson on S. 31,.Henry Mesenbrink on Section 19."

Heinrich's wife, whose name may have been Maria, was 48 years old according to the census of 1850. She was born between 1802 and 1804 in Hanover, Germany. Their children are: Henry Jr., born in 1830 in Hanover - he was over 20 years old in 1853 when the first schoolhouse was built and may also have had a one-year-old child. Another son named Henry born in 1834 and a son named John, born in 1840. Heinrich Sr. was in his late 40's or early 50's when the Franzosenbusch schoolhouse was built.

In 1852 he joined with eight other families to obtain permission from Zion Lutheran in Addison Twp. to form a school district in the immediate vicinity of "Franzosenbusch". In the following spring, along with 8 other "founding fathers" of the Southern School District of Zion Lutheran, he may also have helped to construct the first two- room schoolhouse. It was located on the NW 40 acres of land in section 29 of Proviso Township, Cook County, IL, in what is now Hillside, Illinois.

A "fact sheet" for Henry Mesenbrink can be found at Heinrich Mesenbrink Sr.
