Pastor Alfred Rauch started Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church as a mission church in 1928.  It was the first church established after the formal formation of the Village of Westchester.  Initially services were held in a school in Bellwood on Sunday mornings.  Grace's place of worship was later moved to a store in Bellwood. The corner lot at Manchester Avenue and Devonshire Street was purchased at this time as a future building site.  The first baptism at Grace was that of Audrey Mac Hansen on August 19, 1928.

Interior - Portsmouth Chapel - 1930A small frame chapel was erected on land loaned to Grace without charge in 1930 at what is now Portsmouth Avenue and the Eisenhower Expressway.  One of the construction sheds from the work on the Westchester 'L' became the "shell" of the original sanctuary of the Grace Lutheran Church which was the first church establish in the new Village.  The first person baptized in the chapel in Westchester was Louise Marie Haines on April 13, 1930.  The first marriage performed at Grace united Palmer F. Olson and Lillian Russell on February 15, 1930.
