The church, located at 241 Sawyer Avenue, held its first service on July 5, 1970, with an initial membership of 12.  The Reverend Joseph J. Richardson, Sr. served as pastor. The church is affiliated with the National Council of Community Churches, based in Worthington, Ohio. 

By 1979 the membership had grown to 220.

In addition to regular church services, Saint James hosts:

• a Community Economic Development Senior Citizen Nutrition Center, providing daily hot lunches and other activities under project director, Mrs. Mable Banks.
• through Loyola Hospital, a Senior Citizen Medical Clinic functions with the direction of Mrs. Diane Hatchett..
