First Church of Christ, Scientist

Christian Scientists from La Grange and surrounding communities met in December, 1896, and organized.  The 24 charter members included Henry Werno, president of the Village in 1897-99.

For 11 years, services were held in Conservatory Hall and in the new Township Hall.

In 1900, the first Reading Room opened on Fifth Avenue. Two years later, members of the church purchased a lot at the corner of Cossitt and Catherine Avenues and completed a red-brick colonial-style church there in 1908. Members postponed dedication until 1910, when the building was free of debt.

In 1912, 39 members withdrew to start the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Riverside. Four years later, a church addition was constructed in La Grange to house a Sunday school.

In 1931, 43 more members left to establish a new church in Hinsdale. The original red-brick building underwent complete remodeling, inside and outside, in 1967. Workmen painted the exterior white and added a steeple. The church does not operate on a budget; all contributions are voluntary and unpledged. When the new structure became free of debt in 1973, it was rededicated.

After several moves, the Reading Room was located at 114 Calendar Avenue. Members refurnished it in 1974. Two years later it became part of the Calendar Avenue Mall.
