Wesleyan Methodist Church

A red brick colonial building with its white steeple is the new home of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Located on 18th Avenue just south of Roosevelt Road it has recently moved from its former location at 1101 S. Sixth Avenue in Maywood.

Lots for the new church were purchased in March of 1962. Ground was broken in April of 1963, while construction began in early May. Occupation of the building was in October with the Dedication set for December 1963. The total cost of the building including land and furnishings is $125,000.

The church had its beginnings in December of 1952 as a branch of the Oak Park Wesleyan Methodist Church. Rev. David Crail served as first pastor until 1958.  Later Reverend Robert W. Klatt became the Pastor.  Mr. Klatt was a graduate of Marion College, Marion, Indiana where he received the A. B. and B. Rel. degrees. His theological training was taken at Asbury Theological Seminary at Wilmore, Kentucky, where he received the B. D. degree. He also attended Butler University at Indianapolis, Indiana and Miltonvale College at Miltonvale, Kansas.

With a special emphasis upon youth work and missions the local church helps in the support of missionaries upon some 15 different foreign fields. Weekly meetings for boys and girls are held in conjunction with Pioneer Girls and Brigade Boys programs.

The Wesleyan Methodist Church of America is one of several denominations within the Methodist tradition who date their beginnings to the 18th century revival under John Wesley. As a separate denomination it had its beginning in 1843.
