Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church

The Holy Apostles Church was established in 1959 to serve the needs of the Greek Orthodox communicants in the Western Suburbs. In July of 1959, Father William Chiganos was appointed as the first priest of the newly established community.

In the beginning the religious services were conducted in the George F. Nixon School in Westchester, Illinois. In December of 1959 the Bethlehem Lutheran Church was purchased, located at 15th and Harvard, Broadview. The interior was renovated to conform with the requirements of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese. Sunday School classes and religious services and education for adults and children began.

The newly bought building was only temporary.  The 1960s brought big changes to the Church.

In June, 1961, 4 ½ acres of land was bought on Wolf Road in Westchester to be the permanent location of the new church and school. By 1964 there are 265 families who were members of the community and the Sunday school has an enrollment of 381 children.  Afternoon school was conducted which taught Greek to the children.
