Community Church -- Broadview

The Church Federation of Greater Chicago, representing 23 Protestant denominations, directed a religious survey of the Broadview area to determine the community's church. On the basis of the survey and at their request, assignment was made to Chicago Presbytery of the United Presbyterian Church to establish a Church and a Sunday School.  Services were started January 7, 1945 at Lindop Grade School.

On May 6, 1945, the Broadview Community Church was officially organized and incorporated. On October 5, 1947, ground breaking ceremonies were held on its property which was the gift of Mr. Edmund F. Lindop.  April 11, 1948, a cornerstone laying ceremony was held.  In January 1949, services were conducted in the basement of the new church building. Church services were held there until the sanctuary was finished.

Through the Church Federation of Greater Chicago and the Presbytery of Chicago of the United Presbyterian Church in the USA, the Church became the official representatives of Protestantism in the Broadview community. The teaching of Sunday School and the preaching is centered in the great evangelical truths of the reformed tradition. The theological emphasis is Calvinistic, at the same time emphasizing points of unity in Christianity rather than sectarian differences. The United Presbyterian Church is democratic in its form of government. The church members have had the strong spiritual and financial support of the United Presbyterian denomination. Its contribution to the Building Fund has made the building program possible.

The Reverend J. Dwight Russell was called as the organizing pastor in 1947.  He remained in this community until May 1952.

In July of 1952, Reverend David W. Dodds was called to become the pastor of Broadview Community Church.  During this period of time there has been a continued growth numerically and spiritually in the life of the Church. The Community Church, as most of the people of the area know it never closes its doors. It is called upon constantly for community service and services.
